We actively encourage the children and young people living in our children’s homes to take part in after school activities and individual clubs, which allow them to pursue their own hobbies and interests. We believe that recreational, cultural and sporting activities are a key tool in helping young people to build their self-image, self-esteem and relationships.
Residential activities
All seven of the resedential homes which serve Coxlease School offer residential pupils a range of activities. The young people themselves can suggest the types of activities they wish to take part in and contribute to the home’s activity plan during regular house meetings. Our residential pupils have previously taken part in a range of on and off-site leisure opportunities, including:
- Board games
- Using on-site sporting activities to play football, tennis and other indoor sports
- Themed menus such as fish & chip night or beach themed evenings
- Baking
- Going to the on-site gym
- Cycling
- Horse riding
- Gardening (including growing their own vegetables and herbs)
- Shopping at local malls
- Visiting local beaches on the south coast
- Visiting local parks
- Visiting local libraries
- Visiting bowling alleys
- Going to the cinema
- Attending youth clubs and community-based activities
- Using local swimming baths
Many of our homes also have their own transport, which can be used to help the young people living there to access local amenities. Each residential provision also has funds set aside to be used to help young people participate in organised activities.
Activities as goals
Activities are also used as goals for our young people. For example if a pupil wants to attend a special event that is a few months away, we could use this as a target, which they can work towards by meeting objectives chosen by the young person.
