Hurworth House School offers students a tailored curriculum which is designed around their individual strengths and needs, whilst still helping them to work towards nationally-recognised qualifications, including:
- Foundation level
- Entry level
- GCSEs
Part-time college attendance
We have a number of students on part-time vocational courses with local colleges and training providers. We currently have young people attending part-time courses at Prior Pursglove and Bishop Auckland colleges and learning skills such as joinery and automotive engineering.
Support for young people whilst in alternative provisions is entirely led by the student themselves. We let our young people know that we will accompany them to placement for as a long as they feel is necessary, whilst always encouraging them to work independently and form relationships with staff members at their new placement. Hurworth House School staff also carry out regular quality assurance visits to ensure our young people’s educational and emotional needs are being met in alternative provisions.
Preparing young people for adulthood
Whilst we have clear expectations for our young people, we believe that personal development is just as important as academic achievement. The curriculum we offer at Hurworth House School places a strong emphasis on life skills and community education in addition to classroom-based learning. This approach ensures we provide students with a well-rounded education that prepares them for adulthood.
An environment where young people can thrive
We understand that many of our young people have previously had difficult experiences in mainstream education so we look at how we can support them to create an environment where they can thrive. As a school, we use therapy extensively to remove any barriers to learning so that each student can perform to the best of their abilities and reach their potential.
