Community education

Learning outside of the classroom has a vital role to play in our young people’s social and emotional development. Hurworth House uses community-based activities and trips to help familiarise students with everyday activities that they might want to take part in after leaving school. Any learning outside of the classroom will always be objective lead, whether the young person is working towards educational and/or behavioural targets. Examples include:

  • Visiting a museums
  • Visiting art galleries for art and design students
  • Visiting a company workplace to gain an insight into the world of work
  • Visiting a radio station for students interested in media and communications
  • Visiting the local leisure centres to work on social skills
  • Voluntary work placements as part of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme
