Case studies

Steven* came to Progress School aged 15 having experienced three failed school placements. Two in local authority special schools and one in an independent specialist school for students with autism.

On arrival, Steven was highly anxious and presented frequent incidents of challenging behaviours. He found it very difficult to access school and restricted himself to his own room being very controlling about who he allowed in.

Through a consistent and caring approach we managed to gain Steven’s trust and develop good relationships within a small team of key staff. Steven’s life is now very different and he accesses weekly community activities including swimming, horse-riding, cycling and bowling. He shops twice per week, prepares his own meals to share with staff and enjoys lunch out in a café once a week.

Steven engages in work experience in the school office and liaises with members of the local community every day during his post office duties. Steven’s family say: “The change in him has been miraculous since being at Progress School. We never though he could achieve so much.”
