Our autism approach
At Roehampton Gate School, we recognise the importance of putting autism at the centre of everything that we do. Here, we emphasise our focus on strengths and differences, not deficits; and celebrating these. By focusing on each pupil’s aspirations and outcomes, our curriculum is specifically designed to meet the individual’s needs, so that they can overcome their barriers and build on their successes.
At the very heart of our autism approach is a strength based, socially inclusive community. Involving the young people, their families and school staff, enabling them to work together to empower individuals to reach their full potential. We know that by drawing on the strengths, knowledge, and expertise of our wider community, we will provide a better service and improve outcomes.
Over the last few years, we have refined our approaches to be inclusive of multiple differing models to ensure that we offer the right support to each individual. This allows us to adapt to meet the ever-changing needs of our children and young people and is based on five themes and priorities:
- To understand the individual with autism and enable them to have a voice.
- To develop positive and effective relationships across our community between all peers and staff.
- To create enabling environments that support inclusion.
- To drive effective implementation of plans to enhance and support academic learning, vocational skills, emotional well-being, and development of lifelong learning skills.
- To support with bespoke approaches for individual challenges that may present such as rigid thinking, linguistic (exp/rec) problems, anxiety and emotional regulation and sensory issues
