Young people with autism and Asperger’s are starting further and higher education courses after receiving exceptional results at a specialist South-West London school.

Leavers of Priory Lodge School (now known as Roehampton Gate School) are beginning courses at Reading FE College, the agricultural institution Merrist Wood College, and South Thames College. A young person is starting an apprenticeship as a trainee groom at a stable in Bedfordshire.

A sixth form leaver is starting a BSc in Chemistry at Kingston University in Surrey after receiving three A-level C grades in Maths, Chemistry and Physics.

The schools results are strong, in some cases matching those of mainstream schools or even out-perform them. Of all of the GCSE examinations young people sat, 76% were graded C, the new grade 4, or above. English can be considered a challenging subject for some people with autism, yet 66% of all grades achieved were at the new grade 4 or above. One pupil achieved a grade 8. All pupils entered for GCSE Maths attained at least a grade 4.

Priory Lodge School (now known as Roehampton Gate Schoolwas rated ‘good’ overall and in all categories when it was last inspected by the education watchdog, Ofsted. The school is hosting open days on Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 October: parents considering Priory Lodge as an option can book their place at the event by contacting the school directly.

The main school site is located in Priory Lane, Roehampton, South-West London. In addition there is a sixth form learning ‘hub’ in nearby Fulham. 

Head Teacher of Priory Lodge School (now known as Roehampton Gate School), said: “I feel incredibly proud of our former and current pupils and staff. Young people with autism often find taking exams very stressful, but as a school we really excel at helping them to cope with the pressures, and achieve outcomes that often go even beyond their own expectations.”
