On admission to the hospital, each student’s educational needs are assessed. Ward Leads and subject specialist teaching staff liaise with the student’s home school, college or alternative provision to ensure that there is continuity of provision, and that the student is not disadvantaged in any way. Where a student has disengaged from mainstream education, Ward Lead Teachers carry out an assessment of need and provide an individual education plan and personalised timetable to suit the needs and aspirations of the individual.
We offer the following courses which are taught in combination with the home school curriculum. If one of the compulsory subjects has not been set by the home school, or the student needs more help, it will be taught by our staff.

The education team prepares and enters students for external forms of accreditations and examinations to ensure they have the same opportunities they would have at home; for some this is the opportunity to take new qualifications that will help them in their future lives. North West Hospital School can also act as a ‘host centre’ to ensure that students are supported with their examinations.
The curriculum at North West Hospital School has been developed to enable students to return to their studies on discharge without gaps in learning. We also operate a tracking system whereby student’s progress is monitored against targets set by subject teachers. This is monitored during the term and then reviewed at the end of each half term or when a target has been met.
We uphold and teach students about British Values which are defined as:
- Democracy
- Rule of law
- Individual liberty
- Mutual Respect
Reading
We encourage a love of reading and offer the opportunity to read for pleasure in our curriculum. Every classroom has a library and young people have access to a wide range of texts including fiction and non-fiction books and magazines.
